Townsite Patent Granted (1874) - Official patent granted for the Phoenix townsite.

In 1874, President Ulysses S. Grant granted an official patent for the present site of Phoenix, Arizona. The declaratory statement for the Phoenix townsite was filed at the Prescott Land Office on February 15, 1872, and the official entry was made at the Florence Land Office on November 19, 1873. The total cost of the Phoenix Townsite, which covered 320 acres, was $550, including all expenses for services. This significant event marked the official recognition of Phoenix as a townsite and laid the foundation for its future development.

Following the patent grant, Phoenix experienced growth and development, with a population of 2,453 and a school enrollment of 379 pupils by 1880. The town's incorporation took place on February 25, 1881, marking the beginning of its journey as an incorporated city. The arrival of the railroad in the 1880s further contributed to Phoenix's development as a trade center, establishing the downtown core in a grid layout pattern that has been a hallmark of the city's urban development.
